reactive space

reactive space: counter and cultural responses in contemporary society.
this class begins where culture lets off. at edges of discourse lye fields where the problematics of society take route to build alternative structures. the class will begin with five fields of inquiry: private property, environmental ecology, mental ecology, globalization, and identity. these positions will offer us an entry way into theoreticians, artist, and environmental designers whose work create visions, discourse, and solutions to the spaces which culture defines.

-a studio / seminar for students in all departments that deal with space.
-the class will center on four responsive spatial projects.
-students will research and analyze the work and life of counter-cultural artists, designers and movements and figures of the 20th century and present their findings to the class.
-weekly readings will be discussed.
-outside guests that make responsive space will participate in reviews and present their work to the class.

1. private property: marx, communes, homelessness, wodizcko, dome village, food not bombs, michael asher, hans hacke, naomi klein, daniel martinez, zapatistas, kibbutzim, situ architecture, the unprivate house.
2. environmental ecology: back to the earth, buck minster fuller, earth art, organics, ecotopia, arcosanti, bioneers,eco-design, smithson, entropy, matta clark.
3. mental ecology: add busters, bill board liberation, virilio, add creep resistance, minimalism- dance. sculpture, theater.
4. globalization: debord, situ inspired art, reclaim the streets, festivals, zapatista architecture, rem koolhass.
5. identity: gramsci, sex panic, woman house, piper, export, acconci, queer spaces, black space, womans space.

-private property is defined as the system where property is held by one individual for the exclusion of another.
-environmental ecology is defined as that which pertains to the effects of human use of and on the natural ecosystem-
both spacial and temporal.
-mental ecology is defined as a field that looks at the effects of the profusion of medias in the environment on the
human psyche
-globalization is defined as the trend towards uniformity in the environment, as a function of integration of the global economy, and its effects on human activity.
-identity is defined as the sphere of problematics pertaining to political subjects and there will to define themselves both spacially and socially as unique.
