manufactured lighting project with Cesar Pelli & Associates / 1992-93
These
lighting fixtures were designed with architect Cesar Pelli. He was approached
by Baldinger lighting to design a collection for his line of architectural lighting
products which are mass-produced and marketed internationally.
The project began with research into the lighting fixtures on the market at
the time. I then took a tour of the office, collecting parts of models that
were being made for current projects. I assembled a pile of study models and
forms that I felt had some potential to become vehicles for light, by-passing
the form-making phase of the design process.
The lighting fixtures that emerged were inspired by the forms of the Winter
Garden in Fukuoka and the top of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lampur. Material
tests and experiments looked at the possibilies of paper and perforated metals.
Ultimately they were cast in glass.
