APPAREL RENEWAL {working title}

A series of videos document the transformation of unwanted and discarded clothing on the body of a model. Each Apparel Renewal session takes place in one sitting, either at the Sundown Residence in Los Angeles, or in a residential setting in another city and involves the personal re-working, alteration, customization of an un-worn, ill-fitting, or out-of-fashion outfit of one model individual. A series of models are cast in each city and invited to bring clothing they do not wear, which is then combined with, or supplemented by, other found fabrics and discarded clothing. The resulting videos and outfits will be improvisational and exploratory; elegant, provocative, or perhaps a bit ridiculous. The session is digitally photographed and later animated into a stop-motion video showing the dance-like movements of the model as the clothing evolves and mutates, on their body like a mutable skin. The videos and garments will be displayed at various museums and art institutions beginning in late 2009. [see also: Animal Scores for the 2008 Whitney Biennial and related postcards]
