Sundown Salon #14: Showdown! - WE ARE LUCID DREAMING
Our concept for SHOWDOWN! is to create garments that give the body the freedom to change its shape. In creating a garment especially for the Schindler House we took in consideration Rudolph Schindler’s concept about space and the relationship of space to form. We’ve designed a garment based upon this principle. Our garment is a garment that is both free form and structured. It has a collapsible framework or skeleton that changes the spacial relationship between the body and the garment. With a collapsible framework the person wearing the garment is able to increase or decrease this space between the skin of the body and the skin of the fabric, thereby changing the overall shape of the garment. The first garment is a dress with a collapsible collar and a collapsible waist. We are influenced mostly by the structure of corsets and the folding of accordions. The structured collar and waist is contrasted by the loose free form draping of the body of the dress. The second garment is a dress with detachable sleeves that fold up and down like the body of an accordion. The sleeves have collapsible cuffs that enable the model to change the shape of the sleeves. With this dress we were influenced by the folds and structure of origami as well as accordions.
BIO: “We Are Lucid Dreaming” is a clothing line designed by Trang Chau and Anh Co Tran. In addition to catering to a private Japanese distributor, this newly established clothing line is being carried at Scout, Los Angeles and Marvonek, Costa Mesa. Initially a couture line that started in late 2003, it has since branched out into ready-to-wear for women and men. Initially the couture line consisted of fitted jackets and skirts for women that were inspired by patterns in nature to create movement and spontaneity by breaking away from and reconstructing the once rigid structure of the tailored suit. Designers Trang Chau and Anh Co Tran use their multi-disciplined backgrounds in fashion, styling, and fine arts to create their first clothing line for the more youthful minded and unconventional person.
Trang Chau is an artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Her background covers a variety of interests and experience including the study of film, historical costume, and 19th century literature.
