Sundown Salon #14: Showdown! - GILES MILLER'S SHIFTY DISCO BAND

Shifty Disco is an evolving performance practice which pairs improvised musical expression with the relational aspects of various social situations. It attempts to blur the boundries between the performer and the audience. In Shifty Disco performances, live and recorded sound environments coexist and sound emanates from both acoustic and electronic sources . In past events, Shifty Disco has attempted to balance the freedom of expression granted by its improvisational approach with the straight-jacket of the dancefloor and its soundtrack. For the runway show at Showdown, the Shifty Disco band attempts to serve the models, by creating a soundtrack that allows them to feel sexy and important, while acknowledging the spectacle that is being produced. The band combines ambient soundscapes from various social arenas?from street life to Dodger games?with live and sampled music inspired by the traditions and forms of Soul music. Giles Miller welcomes diva Sean De Lear and musicians Jason Taylor and Greg Burns for this installment of the Shift Disco experience.
