Sundown Salon #14: Showdown! - DIOSCURI

For Showdown!, in yet another example of its preoccupation with multidisciplinary exploits, Dioscuri will combine both architecture and fashion. Not only will an entirely new collection of Disocuri silk scarves be created just for the show, but DioscuriARCH is also designing and building a unique armature - a display wall that not only presents the scarves created for Showdown!, but holds them in a manner that speaks about the scarves' relationship to various parts of the body. This wall is a multi-functional piece, able to break down into smaller, more discrete objects, and the intention is that both the scarves and the designed wall objects will be made available for auction.

BIOS: Teman Evans, Teran Evans & Justin G. Moore - Dioscuri, based in New York City, is a multi-disciplinary design collaborative that focuses on print media, textile manufacturing, and architecture. While DioscuriTYPE is dedicated to publication design, DioscuriSILK is a label created from 100% Thai silk that is both designed and hand-woven in Dioscuri’s silk mills in Thailand. A fascination with material construction also plays a critical role in Dioscuri’s architecture vein, DiocuriARCH. Designers Teman and Teran Evans are the first twins in Harvard University’s history to receive Master degrees in the advanced placement sequence for Architecture at the Graduate School of Design. They have also both worked for Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture, and their unique digital images have appeared in numerous publications and galleries in both the U.S. and Europe.

Justin G. Moore made history at Columbia University as the first to leave its Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation with Master degrees in both architecture and urban design. He has worked in the office of Bernard Tschumi, taught in several New York architecture schools, and has design work that has appeared in publications and exhibitions in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

INTERVIEW

02. do clothes make the man?
ANSWER: Yes, they really do. A person's entire persona is wrapped up in
what they wear. A garment can change a person. It changes the way a person
walks, talks, who you are...it's almost like you are putting on a
personality and your closet is full of them.

03. What is the function of fashion?
ANSWER: Fashion allows people to express to the world everything about
themselves that they cannot put into words. It's almost like a mirror of
yourself that is meant just for the world.

06. who is your all time fashion hero?
ANSWER: Michael Kors, definitely Michael Kors. He never ceases to amaze us.
His work reminds us of really great architecture, it's always now.

08. what is your favorite color right now?
ANSWER: Blue, all shades, tones, and hues. You can express every emotional
nuance with a shade of blue.

11. what do you consider to be a fashion tragedy?
ANSWER: A fashion tragedy for us is someone who misunderstands who fashion
is meant for and decides to disregard it. It's not about spending a lot of
money on clothes or being frivolous. It's about realizing that fashion is
not about everyone else. It's about you.

12. who do you want to wear the garments you make?
ANSWER: Someone who realizes that scarves do more than keep you warm.

13. where does your interest in clothing come from?
ANSWER: The body is like a frame and clothing is meant to attach to that
frame in unique and beautiful ways. It's all inherently architectural.
It's architecture at its most intimate scale. The space within your
clothing is the smallest room that you can occupy.

16. what does a person feel like when they wear something you made?
ANSWER: Different.
